Comrade Provash Ghosh, General Secretary of SUCI (Communist) has issued the following statement on 1 August 2024: "We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of hundreds of people in the heavy rains and landslides in Wayanad, Kerala. The devastating landslide which struck around midnight of July 29 in state of Kerala at Wayanad district has taken a large number of precious lives. As of media reports, the death toll stands near about 250. However, the actual number is much higher and it is rising rapidly. Hundreds remain missing under debris and mud. Some may never be recovered. The entire inhabited area of two small townships has been washed away. The Kerala state is repeatedly witnessing severe droughts, floods, heavy rains and landslide due to the anti-people policies of the governments, paving way to destroy the ecological balance, deforestation, quarrying and big constructions for tourism etc. This disaster which startled the state has left the entire population residing in the fragile areas of Western Ghats in a terror stricken situation. Life and property in other nearby areas remain susceptible to such kinds of disaster at any moment of time. The concerned authorities should take urgent steps to rescue those who are trapped and render necessary assistance. In addition, they are to take scientific precautionary and protective measures so that such disasters do not repeat in future. When disasters become man-made and the authorities are culpable, it is to be considered as an unpardonable offence. It should be remembered that, the responsibility to give protection to human life and nature rests with the governments. The state government must be ready to take responsibility for adopting proper steps in the right time in this regard and must design and implement a comprehensive action plan. They should take immediate step to stop deforestation and big tourism construction. The Central and State Governments have to provide rehabilitation, adequate compensation and livelihood to the people affected by landslides and heavy rain. Moreover, sufficient food, shelter and medical assistance should be provided immediately to the victims. Political parties and people's representatives must raise their voice for proper support and assistance to the affected people by the Central and state Government. A broad disaster management system should be developed by involving all sections of the service minded people of the society."
