SUCI(C) demands immediate withdrawal of the gazette notification to set up detention camps in all states

Comrade Provash Ghosh, General Secretary, SUCI(C), has issued the following statement: We vehemently condemn the most atrocious and autocratic gazette notification of the BJP-led central government issued on 02-09-25 ordering all state governments and union territories (UTs) to set up dedicated holding centres or detention camps to restrict the movement of illegal foreigners until they are deported. With the existing laws and the legal system are quite sufficient to deal with entire gamut of the problem of illegal migrants, the current legislation is quite unwarranted. We note with grave concern that the new law has been framed with a distinct crafty motive. It bears recall that while the detention camps where those mostly from minority Muslim community, unilaterally and arbitrarily branded by the authorities as “illegal migrants”, are held like prisoners of war or even worse than that, the Supreme Court issued strictures to the Assam government to at once free all the inmates. Thus, the whole country has witnessed how those who have been kept in these detention camps, often compared with concentration camps of Nazi Germany, are meted out inhuman treatment. Moreover, many bona fide Indian citizens have also been taken into custody and dumped in these detention camps on the pretext of “not being able to produce valid identity documents”. One can understand what would happen if such detention centres are set up in each state and UTs. It would provide new handle to the communalists-chauvinists nurtured by the ruling bourgeoisie to scare and chase the minorities branding them as illegal migrants. We demand of the central government to immediately withdraw the highly unjust and undemocratic directive and call upon the countrymen to build up a powerful movement to force the government to withdraw this draconian administrative fiat.
