Union Budget Speech of 2024-25 is full of rigmaroles and customary promises without any mention of problems people are grappling with

In an instant reaction to the Budget Speech of 2024-25, Comrade Provash Ghosh, General Secretary, SUCI(C), has issued the following statement today: “The FM has carefully avoided to give any ‘Action Taken Report’ on any of the earlier promised policies and measures keeping the country in complete darkness about the actual performance of the government in previous years on various policy parameters thereby skirting the responsibility of being answerable to the citizens in regard to their growing misery, penury, dip in income, unemployment and job loss which are wreaking havoc in their life. There is no mention of spiraling of essential food articles and other utility items though the FM paradoxically stated that there is a rein on inflation. On the contrary, inclination towards the corporates has been encapsuled in slew of tax and other benefits including financial incentives in the name of further firming up of ‘ease of doing business’. Job creation has been addressed perfunctorily by simply alluding to usual skill development steps, providing internship in companies at a paltry compensation of Rs 5,000 per month (which indirectly will help the owners getting cheaper labour and an additional financial incentive) for one year without any guarantee of permanent absorption. The FM claimed that Minimum Support Prices (MSPs) for 22 mandated agricultural crops has been increased at minimum of 50 per cent over the cost of production suppressing the fact that it is not based on @C2 + 50% formula as demanded by the peasants and n fact much less than that. We strongly condemn this caricature in the name of budget and call upon the suffering countrymen to stand united against such a seemingly pro-corporate financial policy.”
